I have been away for a while. Sorry. Here is a snippet of a project I worked on during my summer in Peoria. More to come on this later. I will be going back to Peoria later this year to continue working on it. I also might turn it into my Master's Project. We shall see.

Kings of Peoria
Hip hop culture is largely underground in the mid-size, central Illinois town of Peoria, but it is a very big part of life for many of the city's residents. One group, Killa Koumity, has been working out of their producer's basement to record an album and try to break through to the mainstream. Although they are working under these conditions and they have families to look after, they have hopes of becoming rap stars. This story is the manifestation of the American dream in Peoria's hidden hip hop community.

A Life Update

The hardest two-and-a-half months of my life are now over. My third quarter at OU was difficult, to say the least, but it was the most productive period of my short career. I stupidly overloaded myself with four content-gathering classes when two is the suggested maximum. I know, I'm an idiot. Let's just hope that I can learn from these mistakes.

I'm particularly proud of the demo derby piece because I am very close with the family and I have been working with them since I came to Ohio last fall. And I will continue working with them as long as I can. There is another chapter coming soon to the family derby story...

Another major part of my quarter was a continuation of my hollers project. I expanded my focus to include more portraits and details in my work, as you can see below. There are some old pictures in this edit, but the final product is closer to the kind of work I want to be doing in the future. Not quite photojournalism, but that's okay with me. I guess I'm more of a fine art photoanthropologist now, but whatever. It's all just semantics. I learn about people and take pictures. That's all that matters.

Keep in mind, the final product of my hollers work was in book form. So, starting with the first two pictures, each pair was intentionally placed together. Try to imagine looking through a nice photo book while you're looking at these.

I'm now settled into Peoria, Illinois, where I'm the summer photo intern at the Peoria Journal Star. Should be a nice change of pace. I might update this blog again soon if I feel like it.

Down in the Holler

In between the forested hills and mountains of Appalachia are geographical features called “hollows,” literally gently sloped valleys between elevated areas. These hollows, or “hollers” as they are popularly known, were a natural place for settlers to make roads and build homes: they provided protection, they were near the mountains, and perhaps most importantly, they were tucked away from view.

Today, these hollers still provide a home to many people in the southeastern Ohio area. In the Hocking Hills, outside of Corning and Hollister, and even near Chesterhill and Stockport, families and individuals make their homes in these little enclaves. Typically, hollers have been very closed off to outsiders. Many people who live there want to get away from society and its constraints. They don’t want to be bothered by anyone for any reason. Tim Nelson, a San Toy holler resident, summed up this attitude by warning, “If a man tells you to get the fuck out of the holler, you’d better get the fuck out of the holler.”

Nelson, a Vietnam veteran who lived in Columbus for many years, came to live in this holler in San Toy, just outside of Corning, because he wanted to get away from everything and be more independent. His attitudes are typical of holler dwellers.
“Just because we live down here doesn’t mean we’re stupid,” Nelson said. “We’re not ignorant bottom-feeders. We live here because we like it. It’s just a simpler way of life.”

They maintain a modest existence, many of them holding blue-collar jobs and living in simple trailers without electricity or reliable heating. And new technology is hard to find. “Ain’t no such thing as a cell phone down here,” Nelson noted about the lack of modern frivolities in holler communities.

Nevertheless, they are a very resourceful and independent people. “Just about everybody who lives in this part of the country does about everything on their own,” said Randy Sidwell, a lifelong San Toy resident who built his own log cabin.

In many respects, however, these hollers are like time warps. The people who live there have heavy Appalachian accents and their attitudes resemble those of their ancestors and their ancestors before them. Prejudice and racism are rampant. On the other hand, there are a few hollers, in Chesterhill and near Kilvert, where more tolerant biracial families have gone to escape the intolerant attitudes of society.

Overall, the people in hollers are genuine, good people. They work hard, they value family and friends, and they cherish a simple existence. Working on cars, hunting animals, shooting guns, riding four wheeers, smoking, and drinking beer and Mountain Dew are all pastimes of holler residents. Despite the withdrawn nature of these areas, holler dwellers form a community of their own—away from the mainstream communities of modern society.

“We ain’t fancy people around here, but we’re happy,” Nelson proudly stated. “What kind of life are you lookin’ for?”

Howard and Barb

Over the past few months, I have been photographing a 68-year old man, Howard, and his wife, Barb. Howard has small cell lung cancer—the type of cancer specifically caused by smoking. Howard has smoked for the past 58 years. He mowed neighbors' lawns to pay for his first cigarettes when he was 10 years old.

This is a work in progress. Howard and Barb are wonderful people and were gracious enough to let me in their home at this difficult point in their lives. Howard is going through treatment now, so hopefully this story has a happy ending. I think this is an important story to tell because so many people in Appalachia are going through this same thing: old coal miners, smokers, and factory workers are all faced with chronic health problems. Health awareness and consumption are some of the issues I plan to focus my work on while I'm here in Ohio.

This story has been incredibly difficult for me to photograph. Most days, Howard sleeps in his chair while Barb completes crosswords in the newspaper to pass the time. She gets plenty of visitors, though, to help her make it through. I like to visit as well to help make them feel cared for.

Appalachian Wedding

Near the end of a long feature hunt one day, I stopped in Glouster, Ohio, and randomly met a man named David and his girlfriend Tasha. David had just broken his leg earlier in the week by running over it with a four wheeler. He was particularly pissed because he and Tasha were supposed to get married the next weekend and he had surgery scheduled for a few days before the ceremony. After only knowing David for a few minutes, I casually invited myself to the wedding. They were a wonderful couple and glad to have me around for their special day.

The wedding was held in a double-wide trailer in Jacksonville. I know, it sounds like a small space for a wedding, but it was the nicest, most personal wedding I've ever had the pleasure of attending. It embodied the down-to-Earth lifestyle that I've come to love about this part of the country. Although David was doped with Percocet all day, he made it through without too much pain.

Anyway, here are my favorites from the weekend. Since I wasn't shooting for a client, I shot the wedding as I saw it, not as people expect to see it in cheesy wedding albums.

I'm a closet sports photographer, apparently. I don't really like photographing the sport, per se, but I like photographing athletes. I guess I can identify with their drive and passion.

First OU Update

Ok, so I got a little busy this quarter. Gimme a break. I love it at OU, though. What a great place to be. Life is so different out here.

In other news, I placed in CPOY for the first time. I got third place in Documentary and an award of excellence in Sports Action.

Right now I am in NYC getting ready to start an internship at James Nachtwey's studios. Should be sweet.

John Singree of Chesterhill, Ohio, owns a horse barn that attracts visitors from all over the state. Singree and his wife, Becky Singree, operate the barn seven days a week and offer lessons and trail riding sessions.

Jewels of July

Here's my last July update. I just finished my internship yesterday, so I'll get my August update up soon.

I photographed a science fiction convention later in the month. I feel like I related to all the people at the conference because I am a nerd. I actually knew what they were talking about most of the time. Who knew that my heavy science background would come in handy? I tried to do some portraits of people in costume, but my lights died and I ended up just using an off-shoe flash and a black background. I still preferred shooting candids, though.

Wheat...Fields of Wheat

The week after I went to DC, the World-Herald sent me out to western Nebraska (on the Colorado border) to cover the wheat harvest. The barber in one of the small towns led me to the Poppe's, a family that has been farming in the area since anyone can remember. The Poppe's were gracious enough to let me follow them around for a couple days as they harvested wheat.

It was an interesting couple of days. We had lots of rain, which interrupted their harvesting schedule because the wheat became too moist for the combines to cut. Even though the Poppe's were annoyed that their work was delayed, I was happy because I got to make more interesting pictures and got to spend more time talking with the guys.

And there was a tornado one night, just about 6 miles west of us. I was in the combine cab at the time we noticed it and asked the driver, LaVern Poppe, if I could get out to take pictures. "No," he said. "Gotta keep cuttin' wheat." Admirable work ethic.

Heartland Honor Flight

One of my first July updates. Early in the month, I had the privilege of accompanying a group of 120 veterans on their Honor Flight to Washington D.C., where they visited the various war memorials and Arlington National Cemetery. So many of these men had interesting stories and wonderful things to say.

The vets were gleaming with pride all day, as if they had been waiting their entire lives for this opportunity—to travel to D.C. with fellow veterans, to see the memorials that were made in honor of them and their fallen comrades. Unfortunately, on the flight home, one of the veterans passed away quietly. His daughter was with him when he passed. Although it was a sad end to a wonderful trip, I guess it was just his time to go (he was 91). I can't think of a better way to go than on an Honor Flight, after a great day in D.C. with your closest family and fellow veterans.

I sat next to a sweet old man named Lloyd Dragoo on the plane. He invited me to his home in Hastings, Nebraska, for coffee. Hopefully I'll have time to go out there before I leave.

June is for Joy

My June life was consumed by baseball and swimming, but I had a couple assignments and found a few good features. These first two images are teens I hung out with in north Omaha. They had some interesting things to say about their community.

These next few are from one of the best assignments I've had all summer: a Polka band performance. It was classic. The bandleader kept telling me that he just wanted "to keep Polka music alive." Beautifully tragic.

Swimming

Even though I hate baseball, I hate swimming more. These pictures comprise the Swimvitational Meet and the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials in Omaha. I'm not much for event coverage, so again it was really challenging for me to actually make some decent pictures. Watching 17 heats of the 1500 meter freestyle was a little rough, but I made it through.

Golf is the sport I hate the most, by the way. There will be no golf updates in the near future.

College World Series

Ok, ok, here's your update. These are from the College World Series, hosted by Omaha every year. It was a real challenge to shoot baseball because I hate it so much. I really do. But I got some decent shots and I learned a lot. I screwed up almost everyday, sustained quite a bit of yelling from coworkers, and spent so much time outside that I'll probably get skin cancer. Oh well. More to come soon from the Olympic Swimming Trials.

American Diversity Project

Here's a collection of images from my week in Eastern Kentucky at the American Diversity Project. I met some interesting people, learned a ton, and made some decent pictures along the way.

Early in the week, I found a group of kids ditching school and doing crazy things. "We're not hillbillies," they said. "We're just crazy as hell."

I also met a man named Wayne Clark, who lives with 5 goats, 7 dogs, a cat, and a wild pig along with tons of abandoned junk. He spends most of his time rearranging his junk.

And this is Bernard Clark, a TV repairman who spends his days repairing old TV's that he will never sell.

Long Time, No Post

Men's Wheelchair Basketball Championship

Long time no update. Sorry. I was busy finishing this stupid engineering degree. Anyway, as I promised in my last post, here are images from the men's wheelchair basketball championship. I spent five days in Stillwater, Oklahoma with these guys and we won! After three years of following this team and seeing them never quite make it, they finally accomplished their goal. That was probably the most rewarding part: not necessarily seeing them win, but seeing them accomplish their goal. They did me proud. National Champions

The women's wheelchair basketball team won their national championship this past weekend. It was awesome. I was so proud of them. It was a very emotional experience for all involved. Here are some pictures — mostly celebrations, sorry — from the win. I will be traveling with the men's team to their national tournament in Oklahoma this week, so I'll post more from that later. They're the No. 1 seed, so hopefully Illinois will have dual champions this year.

Unofficial St. Patrick's Day

Unofficial was this weekend. As usual, it was disgusting. People wandering around drunk all day, puking all over each other, rolling around in the mud, and doing stupid things. After covering this stupid "holiday" for five hours, I had to sit in my room and brood for the rest of the night. I think one of these alky's gave me strep throat, too. Damnit.

Northern Illinois Shootings

I traveled to Dekalb to cover the NIU shootings yesterday. It was tough. We went because we felt that the world needed to see this and how it has affected people, but I wonder sometimes: is too much media coverage of these tragedies bad? Do the crazy people in our world feed off this kinda stuff? I'm always very conflicted when I cover hard news.

After winning all their games, the some of the guys decided to relax by playing in the Burger King playplace adjacent to their hotel. It was quite a scene. All the parents there got scared because there were a bunch of teenage amputees running around the BK Lounge playing tag. Very entertaining.

After the manager kicked them out, they decided to go swimming. One of the guys who couldn't walk wanted to jump in the pool, so his friends sat him on a table and let him slide off into the pool. Another decided to slide into the hot tub across the metal railing bars.

Finally, before going to sleep, the guys played some tricks on their sleeping friends. It involved shaving cream and torn up newspapers. Here are some pics of them plotting in the hotel.

Abandon

My friends and I explored an abandoned Air Force base in central Illinois earlier this week. It was creepy. Nothing had been touched for 15 years. It was like walking through a time machine. Belongings like clothing, toys and books were scattered throughout some of its rooms. Weird.

Rose Parade

The Rose parade was quite a production. I woke up at 3 a.m. just so I could get to Pasadena and shoot before the parade began. Then I shot the game. Didn't get out of the stadium until 10:30 p.m., then passed out for the next 10 hours at home. What a day.

I Shot an Illini pep rally at Universal Studios Citywalk in Hollywood. I've never seen so much orange around LA before. I guess it only comes out once every 24 years. And I shot verticals! This is a big step for me.

We arrived in LA just in time to cover the annual Beef Bowl in Beverly Hills. It was sweet. The food was excellent. It was a huge media circus, but I tried to follow the TV monkeys and use their light in my shots. I think it worked out well.
